Petrus stood, still looking down at a tiny lizard skeleton half-buried at his feet in the hillside dust. He wanted to poke it with the toe of his well-worn sandal, see if it would move, but the sounds of the boys from the village were getting closer. He was small and especially skinny for his age, and no matter how good he got at running, that fact kept the other boys on his case whenever they got bored and finished their chores before he did.
